Fire protection of steel columns
Fire protection for steel columns
GEOFLAM® DC fire-resistant half-shells offer an optimum fire protection solution for metal columns. Their innovative design delays the spread of fire, heat and smoke, ensuring the safety of buildings and their occupants in the event of fire.
GEOFLAM® DC half-shells are available in thicknesses from 25 mm to 45 mm, and in a range of sizes from 200 to 500 mm outside diameter. These elements protect metal posts from fire for up to 3 hours (R15 to R180). GEOFLAM® DC half-shells are assembled by gluing and polochonnage*.
*polochonnage : a method involving the use of GEOCOL® glue, sisal filament and GEOPLASTER ® N to assemble the elements.

The GEOFLAM® DC half-shell fire resistant solution DC
With GEOFLAM® DC fire-resistant products, fire protection for steel posts becomes decorative and aesthetically pleasing. Circular in shape and 25 to 45 mm thick, this system can be used to protect steel columns up to R 180. These steel post protectors are assembled by gluing at the rabbet junction and polochonnage.
GEOFLAM® DC half-shells are aesthetically pleasing and ready to paint, if required, and have the particularity of being able to protect metal columns of various shapes (HEA, IPN, UAP…). The fire stability of steel structures is achieved by limiting the temperature rise of the steel. When load-bearing structures are subjected to heat, it has been proven that, after a certain time and once the yield strength of the steel has been reduced to 60% of its initial value, they will collapse.
The temperature at which this happens is known as the critical temperature.
For the sake of simplicity, the minimum critical temperature value of Eurocode 1993-1-2 that can be used is: 500°C for compressed elements or elements subjected to axial bending and compression.
In order to guarantee the stability of these steel structures in the event of fire, the solution is to slow down the rate at which the steel heats up, thereby favorably influencing its fire behavior.
Following fire-resistance tests carried out at the EFECTIS France laboratory, we offer solutions validated by Procès-Verbal no. EFR-22-000930, using ½ shell GEOFLAM® DC to protect steel structures according to
- The required duration of fire stability (R 15 to 180)
- The critical temperature of the profile to be protected
- The mass factor of the profile to be protected (in m-1) ;
The assembly principle is very easy. In fact, the diameter of the ½ shells is chosen so as to leave a minimum gap of 10 mm between the metal profile and the inner wall of the shell. The metal profiles do not need to be prepared prior to application of the protection.
